Commonwealth Day - 14/03/2011

Today is Commonwealth Day and this year the theme is "Women and Girls - Agents of Change".  I was pleased to launch a Call to Action, urging governments across the world to take action to tackle the inequality which means twice as many women as men are unable to read and write and more than two thirds of out of school children are girls. I also set out my thoughts on the new UN Women's agency and on the importance of the government keeping to its promise to spend 0.7% of our Gross National Income on aid by 2013.
