This morning I visited St Winefride's primary school in Newham where all children in years five and six are learning a musical instrument as part of Newham Council's programme 'Every Child a Musician'.
This is pioneering work led by the Mayor of Newham Robin Wales. It ensures every child can learn to play a musical instrument.
That is right in principle but also supports their development and opens up opportunities for the future.
Everyone will benefit from learning a musical instrument and I'm sure that some of the great orchestral players of the future will come from Newham
The children and teachers I met today were passionate about music. The government must ensure that music in schools goes from strength to strength and does not slip back.
