Statement from Sally Coates, Head Teacher Sacred Heart School

17/01/08

An incident took place after school yesterday.  This was a fight between a Year 9 boy and a year 9 girl.  During the course of this fight the girl was cut with an Art craft knife which the boy had been using for his Art homework.

The girl was taken to hospital with minor and superficial injuries and released the same evening.  This incident is being taken extremely seriously by the Sacred Heart School and indeed the police were informed by us the same evening.  Disciplinary action will follow a thorough investigation.  We are very disappointed that the media has taken this incident to highlight the well documented problems with gangs and knives in South London.  As far as we are concerned the incident is not connected in any way with gangs or drugs but has been caused by a disagreement in school which has obviously got out of hand.  We are very proud of the standards of discipline and academic achievement at Sacred Heart School and would not wish an inaccurate report to any way damage the high regard in which this school is held.
