Today I released a report examining secondary schools choices for parents in Camberwell and Peckham. The report entitled "Are parents in Camberwell & Peckham getting the choice of school they want for their child?" examines first preference applications. The report shows that nearly half of parents in the area are not getting their children into their first choice school.

This is one of the biggest concerns that my constituents raise with me as their MP.

The improvement in exam results achieved by pupils in our local secondary schools is encouraging as 2010 saw Southwark's highest GCSE grades. Some schools are doing exceptionally well and have the confidence of parents but other schools are not winning the confidence of parents.

This is not satisfactory and we need to make sure that all parents get their first choice school. In York 95% of parents get their first choice of school - in Southwark it's only 52.5%.
