Proposed Waste Management Unit

Tustin Estate VisitYou may be aware that Southwark Council plans to build a Waste Management Project on the Old Gas Works at 763 Old Kent Road. The proposal is that a major Waste Management Facility would back onto the Tustin Estate next to Manor Grove and Pilgrim’s Way Primary School.

I am strongly in favour of recycling as part of waste management but I want to ensure that any developments do not make things worse for the local area.

Alongside the proposed Waste Management Project is a plan to build a new access road. Many constituents have written to me with their concerns that this would lead to an increase in traffic, including HGVs, on Asylum Road. I raised these concerns with Southwark Council, on behalf of my constituents.

On Tuesday 20th January the Southwark Council planning committee refused the application for the new access road and changes to the Old Kent Road layout. (Application: 08-CO-0076).

It is my understanding that there will be a fresh planning application for the access road submitted in the next few weeks, which will then be subject to full public consultation.

Following this further consultation, planning officials at Southwark Council have informed me that they will consider the application for the access road at the same time as the application for the main waste facility. If you would like further information about the new application then please contact Southwark Council by:
