Today I met with Southwark Council Leader Peter John at his office in Tooley Street. We discussed the importance of parents being happy with their local schools, scholarships for young people to attend local art colleges and the Peckham Rye station area re-development.

This morning I joined local councillors Michael Situ and Evelyn Akoto to meet parents and carers at the school gate at Camelot Primary school. It was good to meet the new Head Teacher, Steve Forder, Chair of Governors, Juliette Young and Parent Governor Amanda Bono-Odo.

Today I met with local Head's Lucy Frame from ARK All Saints Academy and Yvonne Powell from Walworth Academy. We discussed progress at the schools and how we can work together to improve the transition process when children move from primary to secondary level.

Joined by my Welsh Government colleague John Griffiths, Minister for Culture and Sport and Assembly member for Newport East, we participated in a discussion with Sport Wales today.

The first joint meeting between the UK Labour Shadow Cabinet and the Welsh Labour Government Cabinet was held today at GE Aviation UK in Nantgarw, Wales.

The theme of the meeting was Investment in our future: in our young people, in jobs and apprenticeships. During the meeting Ed Miliband announced that Wales today saw the 10,000th young person get a job through Jobs Growth Wales. Wales continues to out perform the rest of the UK in tackling youth unemployment.

This afternoon I met with the management of NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) - Dr. Amr Zeineldine (Chair), Andrew Bland (Chief Officer) and Richard Gibbs (Lead for Audit and Governance) - to raise my concerns about GP access and the difficulties my constituents have in getting an appointment with their GP.

Visitor attractions are important to families and tourism.  They are important to our economy and jobs and also to community and our sense of place.  Heritage and modern attractions enliven the local environment.  My speech to the ALVA was followed by a lively Q&A where we discussed Labour’s new consultation on Young People and the Arts, innovative ways of reaching people who don’t engage with our heritage sites and the need for Government to work across Departments on tourism.

This morning I met with staff and parents at the school gate as they dropped their children off at Brunswick Park Primary school in Camberwell. I was joined by local councillors Kieron Williams and Tom Flynn, and asked the parents how things were going at the school and whether they wanted to raise any issues with me, and I let them know how they could contact me in the future if they needed to. I was pleased to see the Acting Deputy Head, Shauna Sharkhey and Assistant Head, Andrea Iniss, and hear that everything was going well at the school.

London Labour’s regional organisers joined in Parliament together to celebrate the successes of the 2014 Elections and discuss the campaign priorities for the future. Labour gained just over 200 additional Councillors in London gaining control of David Cameron’s ‘favourite council’ of Hammersmith & Fulham and four other London Boroughs – making gains from the Tories and Lib Dems. We also doubled our MEPs from 2 – 4 in London. I congratulated the team on their success and spoke about how we can keep up the momentum ahead of next year’s General Election.

I attended the annual graduate summer show of students from Camberwell College of Arts this morning. The art and design works were inspiring and it was great to meet the students to talk about their work and what they plan to do after they graduate. Many thanks to Associate Dean Amanda Jenkins for showing me around.

This evening I joined Iain Dale on LBC for his weekly phone in show in their London studios. On air he announced that I will be doing a regular monthly (2nd Monday) slot from now until the General Election. We had a lively discussion and I took a series of wide ranging questions from callers across the country.

Great to meet Camberwell Labour members at The Tiger pub in Camberwell to plan for campaigning for 2015. Congratulations to our 6 councillors - Dora Dixon-Fyle, Kieron Williams, Tom Flynn, Mark Williams, Ian Wingfield and Radha Burgess.

This evening I attended the Advertising Association’s bi-annual Council meeting and discussed with advertising leaders Labour’s Creative Industries review, Labour’s manifesto plans and how to ensure responsibility across the industry.

England Handball visited Parliament today to showcase and promote the sport.

Clive Efford MP hosted the event in which MPs, Peers and staff all had the opportunity to find out about this up-and-coming sport. We also got the chance to take a penalty shot against the Team GB goalkeeper!

The sport is played widely across Europe and is growing in popularity. The event was a great success.

This morning I met parents at the school gate of John Donne Primary school in Peckham along with local councillors Sandra Rhule and Sunil Chopra. I also visited the school and met with Head Teachers Evelyn Holdsworth and Nick Tildesley, and Community Governor Olive Lewis, to discuss their campaign for a secondary-level Free School.

This afternoon I met with Dave Ward, Tom Higginson and Adam Love from Network Rail at the House of Commons to discuss plans for the re-development of Peckham Rye station area. It was a constructive meeting and encouraging to see that they fully support extending the public consultation period.

The Arts must be for everyone, not just for some. That was the theme of my keynote speech to the Roundhouse today, where I launched a Labour Party consultation document on Young People and the Arts.

On Saturday I attended the annual Southwark Civic Awards ceremony at Southwark Cathedral. The awards are for local people - nominated by their local community - in recognition of their service to the community. The ceremony was followed by the inauguration of Southwark's new Mayor Cllr Sunil Chopra and Deputy Mayor Cllr Neil Coyle.
